In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Treatments

IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) treatment is a reliable and effective treatment for infertility. This medical treatment has been improved to a very large extent and gives immensely successful results ideally.

Who Needs IVF Treatment?

...

IVF treatment is one of the treatments used to treat infertility in a couple. Infertility is the inability to conceive a child. This could be caused due to a variety of reasons and may involve one or both partners.

Infertility is caused due to these common factors in women:

  • Congenital (birth) defect
  • Damage to the reproductive system
  • Several medical disorders and diseases
  • Ageing

Infertility is also caused in men, in case the male partner suffers from:

  • ED (Erectile Dysfunction)
  • PE (Premature Ejaculation)
  • Injury
  • Disorder of the male reproductive system
  • Injury to the male reproductive system
  • Ageing

All these factors, and several others, are known to cause infertility. Today, infertility has become one of the most pressing concerns in women’s health and is a prominent issue.

Couples who suffer from any form of infertility are initially advised medical treatment; however, if all else fails and the couple is evaluated to be ideal, then the doctor/gynecologist will advise on a suitable IVF treatment.

What are the Types of IVF Treatments?

There are several options to choose from when it comes to IVF treatment, thanks to the huge advances in medical science. These are some of the top choices for IVF treatment procedures that are also highly effective and successful:

Artificial Insemination

As the name suggests, artificial insemination aims to replicate the natural insemination process. In this, the doctor/physician will monitor the woman’s menstrual cycle to evaluate the ovary function. Ovulation is checked using ultrasound imaging tests, blood tests, or other ovulation testing kits to ensure that there is a sufficient supply of eggs for getting fertilized.

Once the ovulation cycle has been determined, a semen sample from the partner is taken and inserted into the vagina using a catheter. This artificial insemination is done at the optimum stage of the ovulating cycle and directly into the ovary. Artificial insemination shows effect in 2 weeks from the procedure with positive pregnancy results.

Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

This is a mainly external fertilization process. It begins with harvesting the female partner’s eggs from the ovary. One of the ideal eggs is held in place using special instruments. The fertility expert will then use a microscopic fine needle to deposit the sperm directly into the heart of the egg.

Once the fertilization process starts and the embryo is confirmed to be forming, the egg will be carefully deposited into the female partner’s uterus.

Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TSA)

The Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TSA) fertility procedure begins with administering anesthesia (local or general) to the male partner. A very fine needle is used to extract a sample of semen from the testicles along with a sample of testicular tissue.

In the laboratory, the sperm is separated from the testicular tissue carefully. The collected sperm is evaluated for fertility and then injected individually into the extracted eggs from the female partner. Once the fertilization process is confirmed by the formation of the embryo, the doctor will insert the fertilized egg into the female partner’s uterus.

Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer (GIFT)

The GIFT procedure requires extracting eggs and injecting these eggs with mobile sperm which helps to increase chances of fertilization. The mixture of eggs and sperm is then placed in a special catheter. This is then transferred to the female partner’s fallopian tubes through a minimally invasive procedure.

The GIFT procedure differs from the other IVF treatments as the fertilization takes place internally, as opposed to external fertilization in other procedures.

Percutaneous Epididymal Aspiration (PESA)

This innovative IVF treatment method requires the surgeon to remove a larger amount of sperm from the male donor at a sitting. This technique is highly beneficial as it allows preserving sperm samples for a considerably longer period of time.

How Successful is IVF Treatment?

IVF is the most common assisted reproductive technique used today all over the world. As the doctor will fuse more than one embryo in the uterus, the chances of fertilization occurring and turning into pregnancy are heightened.

Regarding the success of IVF treatments, recent reports suggest that:

  • 30% of all successful IVF treatments result in twins
  • Chances of having multiple babies are higher
